Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the Malta Gaming Authority (‘MGA’) has issued further communication to its licensees.
In line with the Commercial Communications Regulations (S.L.583.09 of the Laws of Malta) and the regulation 5 stating that : Commercial communications must be socially responsible, with particular regard to the need to protect minors and other vulnerable persons from harm or exploitation, the MGA has issued a communication for its licensees regarding marketing techniques targeting customers.
In its communication the MGA makes it amply clear that gaming licensees should not encourage, whether directly or indirectly, antisocial behaviour suggesting that gaming can be a solution to the many problems a player may be facing due to the pandemic. Furthermore, no licensee should portray gaming as an alternative to employment or as a future investment, thus presenting it as a solution to financial problems.
This warning follows a similar warning issued by the UK Gambling Commission a few days ago which also highlighted the element of social responsibility when onboarding new customers.
